French Territory of the Afars and the Issas

The French presence in East Africa started by the establishment of the post at Obock (1862). The territory grew and became the French Coast of the Somalis (French Somaliland) in 1946 and then the Territory of the Afas and the Issas. It acceded to independence in 1977.
