Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza
1852-1905
After the debacle in 1871 Brazza, an aristocratic naval officer, was the incarnation of the elegant, disinterested hero, always at the service of the greatness of France in exotic, far-off countries. It is Brazza the African, the liberator of slaves, the knight of peace, civilisation and anti-slavery. This explorer, the peaceful conqueror, was at the origin of the French Congo. The Archives Nationales d'Outre-Mer also offers a work on the same theme in its (Histoires d'Outre-Mer) Overseas Territories Histories collection. New France - New horizons
History of a French land in North America 1604-1763
In 2004 to highlight the 400th anniversary of the French presence in America, France and Canada undertook to relive their common history by putting on-line documents reproduced in full, from the departure of the first French emigrants to the English conquest. This website, a real challenge from the archive point of view, is the fruit of a partnership between the Library and Archives Canada, Archives de France and the National Archives of Quebec. This portal gives access to a virtual exhibition as well as a database containing more than a million images. The Archives Nationales d'Outre-Mer took part in the supply of documents for the iconographic illustration of this website. |
